A Lifeline for the Homeless this Holiday Season

Lifeguard Digital Health’s Harm Reduction App is a Powerful Tool against Drug Overdose, keeping those Most At-Risk Safe and Connected

Vancouver, British Columbia (December 2021) — Lifeguard Digital Health’s overdose prevention App has exceeded expectations since its 2020 launch, in partnership with BC Public Health Authority. Over the last year, the Lifeguard App has responded to the dramatic rise in mental health illness and substance-use by providing direct access to mental health resources and services.

In a signal that more people are spending more time on the App, and that it’s working as a harm reduction tool, EMS calls through the App were down in November, while there was a record jump in App usage frequency from 2.75 to 3.66. An increasing number of people are tapping into the App’s life-saving services and treatments, that populate the platform based on the user’s location.

This holiday season, Lifeguard is partnering with an array of social services across BC, such as the Overdose Prevention Society, providing Lifeguard Gift Packs for the homeless and less fortunate. Lifeguard’s campaign to spread holiday joy and support for mental health for all, is a powerful tool in the Ministry of Mental Health and Addiction’s campaign to de-stigmatize drug addiction and identify the opioid epidemic as a public health crisis.

CEO Jeff Hardy says, “From bad drug alerts, to drug testing facilities, prevention services, counselling, opioid treatment and support groups, Lifeguard’s App is seeing a consistent rise in user engagement and core user base. The App is an effective tool for supporting people who are suffering, especially from the pandemic, and now the holidays.”

To date, Lifeguard Digital Health’s overdose prevention App has registered more than 7800 users with over 80 000 sessions and 43 lives saved. As the province braces for the holidays, Lifeguard Digital Health aims to double the number of Gift Packs it donates this year, working again with organizations such as the Overdose Prevention Society. To help make this winter a little easier for the homeless, Lifeguard Digital Health’s Gift Pack includes emergency blankets, gloves, thermal socks, hand/foot warmers, and a personal hygiene kit.
